Goodbye Summer, Hello Maintenance

It may be hard to believe, but Labor Day is just two-and-a-half weeks away. That may mean many things including a final trip to the beach, the start of a new school year, Halloween candy on store shelves and the first crisp mornings of the year.  It’s also a time to prepare your home for the pending season, as fall formally begins on September 22nd.

While winterizing a home or opening a pool for summer are more familiar, specific milestones in a home’s year, preparing for fall is equally important. The weather can change quickly and preventative maintenance early in the season can prevent costly, time-consuming repairs.

Have your furnace inspected to check for leaks and heating efficiency, and winterize your air conditioning by covering outdoor units or removing window units.  Check your roof for missing or damaged shingles and debris, and address any concerns immediately to avoid significant repairs or replacements. Hire a professional chimney inspector who is certified for the different levels of inspection to ensure it is safe to use during the coming months. Check water drainage to ensure it is properly routed away from your home, away from foundations, driveways and walkways. Inspect trees and other landscaping to ensure any damaged limbs that could break during bad weather are removed. Service summer power equipment by removing any remaining fuel, and service any generators to ensure it is properly fueled and in good working order.

Depending on the climate and features of the home the checklist may vary, but taking the time to check on at least the major systems and structures will identify any possible concerns before major issues become apparent.
